We pick back up with the group in Oceanside continuing to train in case The Whisperers return. Tensions are high as our heroes struggle to hold onto their concept of civilisation. 

A flashback reveals the origins of Alpha and Beta and Alpha attempts to toughen up Lydia as they prepare to walk with the dead. Meanwhile, the Whisperers create their herds. 

The threat of the Whisperers' return leads to paranoia sweeping over Alexandria. In the meantime, Carol battles with the need for revenge. 

Still-paranoid Alexandrians get riled up over the Whisperers, and take their fear out on Negan. Meanwhile at Hilltop, the group deals with an unexpected safety issue. 

The residents of Hilltop struggle when supplies go missing; Negan becomes an Alexandrian's idol; Ezekiel has a secret. 

Carol and Daryl set out on a mission together; Siddiq has a difficult time trying to solve a mystery. 

Daryl feels increasingly uncomfortable after Carol's constant pressure, while Alpha and Beta begin to notice strange attitudes within the group, which leads them to have doubts about someone. 

Flashbacks reveal the history of Dante; a fight causes some tension in Oceanside; the Alexandrians set out on a high-stakes mission. 

The collected communities are reluctantly respecting the new borderlines being imposed on them. The very idea of whether civilisation can survive in a world filled with the dead hangs in the balance. 

The group must defend Alexandria from a threatening outside force from destroying their lives and homes. 

The Whisperers are coming for Hilltop. After Daryl and Lydia's encounter with Alpha, the communities must decide whether to run or fight. Meanwhile, Eugene's communication with Stephanie gets complicated. 

Following the attack on Hilltop colony, led by Alpha alongside Negan, The Whisperers lead a massive horde of walkers into the settlement while the survivors are forced to fall back. 

Michonne takes Virgil back to his mysterious island to reunite with his family; in exchange, Virgil promises weapons that could change the tide of the Whisperer War. 

Heroes and villains reckon with the aftermath of the Hilltop fire; Eugene takes a group on a journey to meet Stephanie, with the hopes of befriending another civilization. 

The communities prepare for the final battle of the Whisperer War; meanwhile, Eugene's group encounters Princess. 

The survivors are still dealing with the horrible show of power of the Whisperers, reluctantly respecting the new borders imposed. They also organise themselves as militias and prepare for a battle that may be inevitable. 

Maggie returns, to the dismay of Negan, with the trials she endured since leaving making her harder in order for her and her son to survive; Daryl and Maggie unexpectedly fight an unseen and unknown threat. 

Daryl and Carol find an old cabin that takes Daryl back to his years away from the group after Rick disappeared; he relives the painful memory of meeting a reticent survivor and the toxic events that amplified his relationship with Dog. 

With Maggie's map, Gabriel and Aaron search for food and supplies to bring back to Alexandria; checking out one more location, they chance upon a stash; faith is broken and optimism is fragmented when they are put to the ultimate test. 

Eugene, Ezekiel, Yumiko, and Princess are captured and separated by the mysterious troopers that surrounded them at the rail yard. Claustrophobic with mounting anxiety, Princess struggles with memories of her traumatic past, and plans to escape. 

At the lowest point in their friendship, Daryl and Carol come to a fork in the road and head their separate ways; Carol returns to Alexandria, while Daryl stays on the road, each going into their own type of survival mode. 

With Maggie back at Alexandria, Carol takes Negan on a journey, hoping to minimise the increasing tension. There, Negan has too much time to self-reflect and comes to a conclusion about his future.
